Kiosk is an NS concept with an extensive range of food, drinks, newspapers, and magazines for on-the-go travellers - in short, everything to meet the daily needs of travellers. Speed is of the essence here, not only in the layout and routing of the Kiosk shops, but also in the service, which aims to help customers at lightning speed. At any time of the day, you can visit the Kiosk for something to eat, drink or do on the go. Kiosk is located in more than 100 locations in and around NS railway stations throughout the Netherlands.
Short waiting times are essential for train passengers, so it is crucial to help customers quickly. Self-service, especially self-checkout, fits seamlessly with Kiosk's concept, which is entirely set up according to the grab-and-go principle. Self-checkouts allow customers to quickly scan and pay for their purchases themselves during peak times without the intervention of an employee, who can help other customers in the meantime. NS enlisted the help of self-checkout specialist Pan Oston and software supplier Centric to introduce and integrate the self-service concept into the Kiosk shops at NS stations.
Kiosk stores are usually found in locations with limited space, such as railway stations and on platforms. It is therefore a challenge to offer a wide product range in these compact locations and find space next to the attended counter to install one or more self-checkouts. Working with Centric, Pan Oston developed a custom self-checkout based on the modular SLIM concept, the core unit of which is equipped with a touchscreen, scanner, receipt printer, and payment terminal and can be mounted directly on the existing shop counter. This ensures that no valuable floor space is lost by installing a completely free-standing self-checkout.
Another advantage is that Kiosk staff always have a clear view of the self-checkout. This means they can quickly assist customers who run into problems scanning or checking out their purchases and directly monitor the use of the self-checkout to prevent instances of fraud and theft.
After several successful tests with the SLIM self-checkout units, NS has rolled out the concept, and countless travellers now use the self-checkouts at over 70 Kiosk branches at NS stations in the Netherlands on a daily basis.
Thanks to their modular and flexible design, Pan Oston's self-checkout solutions are suitable for many different retail concepts. Wondering what they can do for your shop? Our team of specialists is ready to work with you to help you optimise every customer interaction in your shop.
